About Nicole Throop
Counseling and Consulting
Fun fact…. I began my college career studying creative writing and literature. I have always loved stories and the powerful portrayal of a resilient spirit. Therapy allows me to be part of another person’s beautiful story. We feel the pain of life together, and we find a way to come through with a greater understanding and appreciation of who we are. I am so grateful to be present in those moments. It is a gift to see someone lay down the pain they have been carrying for years and believe, with confidence, that they can persevere through the trials and triumphs ahead.
I earned my Master's degree in counseling from Central Michigan University in 2010. I began practicing with a limited license in 2011. I became fully licensed in Michigan in 2014 after completing a little over 2 years of supervised practice. Most of that time has been spent in outpatient therapy focusing on trauma, depression, and anxiety. I have pursued additional education in cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and polyvagal theory. The learning I pursue is aimed at building my skills in a holistic approach to healing. All of our systems are connected, and I believe we cannot truly heal without focusing on the whole person.
Prior to becoming a licensed professional counselor, I served a short stint as a high school English teacher. I taught at an inner-city school where literature was not at the top of students’ concerns. My time as a teacher kindled my passion for outreach and eventually therapy. I wanted to help students address issues preventing them from focusing on future dreams.
I am a dreamer, and a bit impulsive. I didn’t think about what I would do once I graduated with a degree in creative writing and literature. I am, however, grateful for the places it has led me and the perspective I gained. It gave me an appreciation of words, diversity, and overcoming. It taught me to find beauty in small things. This definitely influences my style of therapy.

When I’m not working, I love to travel, camp and spend time outside with my husband and two teenagers. Since I live in the north, and am not much for winter sports, this happens mostly in the summer, or when I’ve saved for an epic vacation. Reading and listening to music, snuggled up with my two pups, help me to get through the long winters.
